Sometimes, people ask me...'hey, Doc,whats the most important organ in the human body'.....This is actually a difficult medical question because it takes into account a lot of parameters..While I wont be answering that question on this post,I would leave the answer to your imagination from the content of this post.
Today, we are going to be focusing on the most complex and of course, most advanced piece of organic matter known to man, The Human Brain.
INTRODUCTION
The brain is a complex organic tissue located in your skull(sorry for the simple definition).It typically serves as the command center of the body. It is what makes us think, sleep, eat, poop, love, hate, get angry, read this blog......the list is endless..it is what makes us tick....everyday of our lives..tirelessly performing the endless task of initializing, controlling, and coordinating everything we do.
WHY THE BRAIN
Hmmm....because it is the key..look around you right now ..no matter where you are.; in a car, in your room, in a park ,in a airplane...pick any place..the brain is single-handedly responsible for whatever you see..The brain is the
source
of the urge for humans to invent, innovate, create and quite unfortunately, dominate and destroy.
WHY STIMULATE THE BRAIN
In a world dominated by ambitious thinkers filled with the desire to be ahead, to innovate the already-made, to create the unknown, you have to think a little deeper, wider and sometimes crazier to make a difference. Most people think that all things original have all been known but that is far from the truth..In my opinion, original thoughts, words and actions are limitless..It all lies in our power to unlock the depths of our brains.
HOW DO I STIMULATE MY BRAIN
The first and easiest thing to think about is that the brain is a muscle and as such, it needs to be exercised regularly. Of course, you dont need money or recharge vouchers to stimulate or power your brain..that being said, I would be telling you about the 9 quite simple ways to increase your brain power
1. Learn something new
When the brain faces a new challenge, it gets intensely stimulated. This actually changes the structure of the brain, creating new neural pathways ,improving intelligence and thus brain power..You could learn to play a musical instrument(guitar is my favorite), learn to drive, take new routes to your destinations, learn a new game(e.g chess)
2. Regular Exercises
Some authors claim that regular exercise cause neurogenesis ( creation of new brain cells). Although I wouldnt bet on that, exercise actually helps the brain by effectively sending oxygen and nutrient enriched blood to the brain ..this helps to improve brain function and general well-being.
3. Train your memory
Obviously, this is very important..People often wish they were someone smarter..yet make no effort to help themselves. One simple way to train your brain is to memorize phone numbers, names, ..playing memory games also help. Nowadays, there are easily accessible android apps for these purposes.
4. Be inquisitive
One of the qualities that makes us human is the zeal to get knowledge.This is a positive line in increasing brain power. Be curious about things..do not be restricted to your area of specialization..Yes , curiosity kills but curiosity creates amazing things..This is important for developing new ideas.
5. Be optimistic
Hmmm..why would this be on my list..it is said that stress and anxiety kills existing brain neurons and stops new neurons from being created..(difficult to believe). but the truth remains that the brain brain speeds up the brain and its ability to analyse information..In some cases though, a state of anxiety might be helpful in short term needs..
6. Eat smart
You have probably heard that the impulses travelling at lightening speed through the brain would be enough to light a bulb..its no wonder the brain consumes over 20% of the nutrients and oxygen we consume..It pays to consume the good stuff such as fish..fish is widely referred to as brain food. This is because oily fish contain omega 3 fatty acid which helps the brain..Other brain foods include fresh vegetables and fruits..
7. Reading
Majority of the external information recieved by the brain is visual...Reading is no exception..Reading a book, novel, magazine relieves tension and stress and forces the brain to create word-picture imaginations which aids brain power.
8. Adequate sleep
loool....This is actually ironic because the brain actually never sleeps..but sleep helps relieve tension and excessive firing of neurons..Unnecessary stimulants from the 5 major sense organs( eyes, ears, nose, taste and skin) are withdrawn to some extent in sleep.
9. Ditch the calculator
Nowadays people rely on calculators ,smartphones, calenders.etc to do difficult sums for them..This does not help our cause in any way..Calculating a difficult some in your brain creates a beautiful mental picture..(well..that is if you love maths)..why use such devices when you have the device which created them all.....the human brain..
