Shirley Manson thinks Kanye West's Grammys stunt was, well, garbage. After the "Only One" singer rushed the stage when Beck beat out Beyonce
for Album of the Year -- later telling E! that the "Blue Moon" singer
should "respect artistry" and give his award to Queen Bey -- Manson took
to Facebook to blast his "petty" actions.
"Dear Kanye West," the Garbage rocker began in her post on Monday, Feb.
9. "It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your
own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent,
hard work, and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and
savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK."
But she didn't stop there. "You make yourself look small and petty and
spoilt," she continued. "In attempting to reduce the importance of one
great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music
from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your
toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete tw-t."
West, 36, first made headlines
for what most people assumed was a joke when he followed Beck onstage,
reached for the mic, and then returned to his seat without saying
anything. It seemed initially like he was poking fun at his infamous
VMAs interruption of Taylor Swift in 2009 -- but a post-show rant made clear that he was serious.
"What happens is, when you keep
on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in
the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you're
disrespectful to inspiration," he told E! of Beyonce's loss, noting that
he was "here to fight for creativity."
Manson, 48, argued that Bey could probably take up that fight herself if
she wanted. "P.S. I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn't need you fighting
any battles on her account," she wrote in her Facebook post. "Seems
like she's got everything covered perfectly well on her own."
